Specified Skilled Worker Visa – Full Guide

PeriodType 1: up to 5 yrs / Type 2: unlimited

Residence status for specific industries. Type 1 (5-year cap) and Type 2 (unlimited renewals). Covers 14 sectors including food service, construction, manufacturing, and nursing care.

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) status was established in April 2019 to address severe labor shortages in specific industries. Type 1 targets workers who have completed 3 years of Technical Intern Training or passed the skills evaluation test; Type 2 targets experienced workers with higher skill levels. Since the 2024 expansion to all 14 sectors, SSW has become one of the most accessible work visas for foreign nationals in Japan.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Pass the Specified Skilled Worker Evaluation Test for the target industry
  • Pass the Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese (JFT-Basic) or JLPT N4 or above (waived for Type 2)
  • No history of illegal employment or immigration law violations

Required Documents

  • SSW employment contract with the accepting organization (original)
  • Skills test certificate and Japanese language test certificate
  • Passport and residence card (or current status-related documents)
  • Support plan issued by the accepting organization

Application Tips

Technical Intern Training completers (3 years) are exempt from the skills evaluation test for SSW Type 1. Start preparing application documents 6 months before your TIT completion to avoid any gap in your residence status.
