[Urgent] SSW Food Service Sector Applications Suspended
From April 13, 2026, new CoE applications for SSW in the food service sector are suspended. The 5-year intake cap of 50,000 workers has nearly been reached. Renewals and job changes for existing holders are unaffected.
Engineer/Humanities Visa Screening Tightened
From April 15, 2026, JLPT N2-level Japanese is required for roles involving language and communication. Employers disqualified under SSW or TITP are also banned from sponsoring this visa.
Naturalization Residency Requirement Doubled to 10 Years
Effective April 1, 2026, continuous residency for Japanese naturalization increased from 5 to 10 years. Tax records for 5 years and social insurance for 2 years are now required.
Student Visa Part-Time Work Monitoring Tightened
From April 2026, Japanese language schools and immigration cooperate to verify students work hours. From July 2026, Japanese ability is also checked at enrollment.
PR Guidelines Revised: 5-Year Visa Required from April 2027
ISA revised PR guidelines on Feb 24, 2026. From April 2027, applicants must generally hold a 5-year residence period stamp. Late payment history counts negatively even if later settled.
Major Visa Types
Specified Skilled Worker
Residence status for specific industries. Type 1 (5-year cap) and Type 2 (unlimited renewals). Covers 14 sectors including food service, construction, manufacturing, and nursing care.
Engineer / Specialist in Humanities
For IT engineers, translators, marketers, and other professionals. Requires a relevant university degree or 10+ years of work experience. The most common work visa for foreigners.
Student Visa
For students enrolled in Japanese universities, vocational schools, or language schools. Part-time work allowed up to 28 hours/week (40 hrs during long vacations).
Highly Skilled Professional
Points-based system: 70+ points earns preferential treatment; 80+ allows PR after 1 year; 90+ after 6 months. Includes privileges like family sponsorship and dual activities.
Dependent (Family Stay)
Allows spouses and minor children (under 18) of foreign nationals on work or student visas to reside in Japan. With 'Permission to Engage in Other Activities', part-time work up to 28 hours/week is permitted.
Permanent Resident
Generally requires 10+ years in Japan (can be shortened for highly skilled workers). No expiry, no work restrictions after obtaining PR.

A. Type 1 caps at 5 cumulative years with no family sponsorship; Type 2 has unlimited renewals and allows family members. Type 2 now covers all 14 sectors since 2024.
