Immigration Application Fees Increased (April 1, 2025)

From April 1, 2025, Japan raised standard immigration application fees — the first increase in several years. Status change and period extension fees rose from JPY 4,000 to JPY 6,000. Permanent residence application fees (collected on approval) rose from JPY 8,000 to JPY 10,000. The government has also submitted legislation to raise statutory fee caps to JPY 100,000 for extensions and JPY 300,000 for permanent residence, signaling significantly higher fees in the future.

Key Points

  • Status change/extension fee: JPY 4,000 → JPY 6,000
  • Permanent residence application fee (on approval): JPY 8,000 → JPY 10,000
  • Future statutory cap increase to JPY 100K/JPY 300K is under legislative consideration

Recommended Action

Given planned future fee increases, consider submitting visa renewal or permanent residence applications sooner rather than later while current fees are still in effect.
